Owl, poppies and fox on a full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full arm sleeve shows a detailed barn owl portrait near the shoulder, with red poppy flowers and buds beneath it. A fox head with shaded fur and an amber eye sits lower on the upper arm, and green leaves and foliage wrap toward the forearm. The shading is soft and realistic, with colour ink dominating across the flowers, fox and foliage, while the owl is mostly browns and greys. The subject is a woman taking a mirror selfie, with her face largely hidden by a yellow phone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The fox had been circling Hollin Wood for ten nights before the owl agreed to speak to him, and by then the barley on Cold Acre had gone the colour of weak tea. She sat in the mouth of the old barn with her pale face turned to the lane, as if she had been waiting for him all along, and she did not look at him when she said, "You want the red flowers. Everyone wants the red flowers."

The poppies grew only along the headland, where the plough had never quite reached. The owl told him they closed their petals at dusk, folded their scarlet into green cloaks, and slept through the cold so the field could sleep too. Their seed was the only thing that kept the mice coming back, and the mice were the only thing that kept the fox fed. She wanted a vole every night for a month, laid at the barn door, and in return she would show him where the flowers went to seed in the dark.
He brought the voles. She showed him the seed heads, rattling like dried peas, and he thought that was the end of it. But on the last morning he came back before light and found her asleep in the poppy bed, her wings folded over the buds, one red petal caught in the feathers at her shoulder. Her eyes were shut, and for once she looked like what she was, a small brown thing that had spent all night keeping watch.
He did not wake her. He took the petal gently between his teeth and carried it back across the stubble to the wood, and it stayed red the whole way home.
