Black and grey rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose with several layered petals and a shaded centre fills most of the forearm, with a second bloom and darker leaves behind it near the wrist. The work uses fine, soft shading and smooth tonal gradients in black and grey ink. The arm rests against a car steering wheel and dashboard, with the tattoo shown in sharp focus against the skin.

Sit nearer the hearth, child, the fire has gone to ash and my knees are older than the cloister wall. You want the rose, then. Brother Anselm kept the walled garden at Saint Cuthbert's on the fen edge, and in the spring the river drowned the lower field, he found a rose climbing the north face of the wall, where no sun had any business reaching.

It was not red. The brothers argued over it at supper for a week. Its petals were the colour of wet slate and of the sky before snow, and when the light came slant across the marsh, every fold showed its own shadow, soft as breath on a window. Anselm wanted to cut it down for the dye pots, but the old abbot said a plant that grew in the shade of stone deserved its shade, and he forbade it. So Anselm tended it at dusk with a bone-handled knife and a lamp he never let go out.
The winter the abbot died, a second bloom opened behind the first, darker, its leaves edged like iron filings. Anselm was found kneeling in the frost with his palm flat against the bricks, so still that the crows had settled on his shoulders. They buried him where the rose could see him from the wall.
So when the bell rings for compline, the novices carry their lanterns past that wall and say nothing. Look there, where the petals fold into the dark. Do you see how the light lives inside the shadow? That was his doing. Now hush, and I'll tell you about the ferryman's daughter.
