Black and grey roses on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two large roses with detailed petals and several leaves run up the outer forearm, with the bloom at the top shown in profile and a second rose lower down. The work uses fine linework and soft grey shading to give the petals depth, with dotted stippling in the darker areas. The tattoo is black and grey only, photographed against a wooden wall with a beaded bracelet on the wrist.

Dear Margaret,

Ward 9 has gone quiet at last, so I'm writing this on the back of the drug round sheet while the kettle takes its time. You'll remember Mr Okonedo's roses. He had them drawn on the windowsill in biro, the whole bush from the bottom of the cutting up to the open bloom at the top, because the garden at his old house in Harehills was sold off before he came in. Every night he asks the same question: did anyone water them? I tell him yes, because somebody should.

Tonight the bloom he drew had a second rose tucked beneath it, smaller, leaning the same way as the first. He said the lower one was his wife, who always stood a step behind him in photographs. I didn't know what to say, so I held the pen steady while he added the shading, dots pressed in with the very tip so the darkest bits looked like rain soaking into paper.

Around three the porter came up with a trolley of clean linen and a bunch of supermarket carnations nobody had asked for. We put them in a jug by the sink. Mr Okonedo looked at them for a long time and then said the carnations were fine, but the roses on the sill were the ones that counted.

I'm going home at seven. Could you ring the nursery on Coronation Road and ask whether they still stock the old rambler cuttings? I'll pay for it myself. He wants one planted under the window of his new room, and I've promised.

Love, Jo
