Black and grey rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose in shaded black and grey, with a side bud, several shaded leaves and a thorny stem, runs from the wrist down the inner forearm. The shading gives the petals soft tonal gradients and fine detail, and the thorns and leaf veins are drawn with clean linework. The photograph is taken at an angle against a red wall, with the hand raised and the tattoo filling the left side of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pull your chair in closer, love, because the lift's been dead since Tuesday and I'm not shouting this up eleven floors. You want the story of the rose on the balcony at Clement House? Everyone on the estate knew it. Nothing else would grow up there in that wind, but that rose did, in a tin bath Mr Pask had nailed to the railings. It came up grey as dishwater and stayed that way, black in the heart and silver at the petal edges, like someone had drawn it in pencil and never bothered with paint.

Nobody watered it except the rain, and the rain was never generous. Mr Pask had been a sign-writer before the factories shut, and he always said the rose only wanted to be looked at properly. So every morning he leaned out with his tea and looked. The thorns kept growing, longer and sharper, right down the drainpipe to the car park where the lads used to smoke, and he never once cut a single one.

Then came the winter the council wanted the block emptied. Brenda from flat nine, who never liked anything, went out one dark night with her kitchen scissors so the bailiffs wouldn't have it to sell. She got a thorn straight through her thumb for her trouble. Next morning the tin bath was bare, but on the railing a single bud had opened, pale as a candle, and the stem had wound itself round the bars like it was holding on.

Some mornings you can still see it from the bus, a grey bloom eleven floors up, thorns running down the brickwork like a signature nobody has finished writing.
