A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself down by the stove, boy, and mind the nets, they've been waiting on you since Tuesday. You'll want the proper version, not the one they tell in the Anchor. Ewan Pryce came aboard the Brinelle at Mousehole with a deckhand's sack on his back and not a penny in his pocket, and the first thing he did was ask the cook for a needle and a pot of Indian ink.

The cook was Dolly Creagh, who had a fist like a mooring bollard and no patience for vanity. She gave him the needle anyway, because the Brinelle had lost three men the winter before and she reckoned a man with something to remember might pull harder on the warps. So he sat on the hatch cover in the grey before dawn and pricked a rose into his forearm, petal by petal, then the leaves, then the little shadows under the leaves, working by the galley lamp while the swell lifted the hull and set it down again.

For a fortnight he kept his sleeve rolled, and the crew made their jokes about it. Then the herring came in so thick the nets split, and that rose was the only thing on the whole deck that didn't look like it was drowning. When the skipper finally asked what it was meant to be, Ewan said it was the colour a rose goes when nobody is looking at it. He pulled his sleeve down over the wet ink and went back to hauling, and nobody asked him again.
