Butterfly and daisy on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A butterfly with its wings partly open sits above a daisy with a stem and two leaves, both drawn on the outer forearm. The linework is fine and the wings and petals are softly shaded in grey, with the centre of the daisy left detailed. The plain pale wall and the floral blouse and belt at the edge of the frame keep the focus on the arm.

The back door was propped open with a bread tin because the ovens throw out heat like a furnace even at four in the morning, and that is how the butterfly got in. I found it on the cooling rack at ten past five, one wing folded flat, the other lifted as if it were still deciding. Grey and white, the colour of the flour dust on the bench.

I should have shooed it out with a tea towel. Instead I set a jam jar over it and carried on shaping the tins of bloomers, pressing each loaf with the heel of my hand while the radio murmured the shipping forecast. Thirty years in this kitchen and I still like to know what the sea is doing before the sun comes up. Outside, the lane was grey and wet, and the gulls were not yet awake.

Mair Hughes came in at six for her usual split tin and stood looking at the jar. 'It's dying, Nora,' she said, which was her way of asking. I told her it was resting. She bought a bunch of daisies from the bucket by the till, the ones I'd picked up from the market garden on Tuesday, and asked for a jug so she could set them on her windowsill where the light would catch them.

When the sun cleared the harbour wall I lifted the jar and carried it out to the step. The butterfly sat a moment on my knuckle, then tilted its wings open to the first warm light and went off low over the daisies in the window and away towards the bay. Mair said it was a sign. I said it was a butterfly, and went back in for the next batch.
