Laurel wreath on the forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A laurel wreath is tattooed around the lower forearm near the wrist, with two branches of outlined leaves meeting at a tied ribbon below. The leaves use crisp outlines with soft grey shading, and the wreath sits open at the top. The photo is taken from above, with the hand resting on a teal and dark woven blanket.

The big top had a hole in its roof the size of a cartwheel, so when the rain came on the Thursday in Swindon we set buckets under the trapeze and carried on regardless. Nobody had paid to see a dry show since the spring. Dad sold the second elephant to a farm outside Reading and told us it was for the grazing, and we all nodded as if we believed him.

Tilly Marr had ridden bareback since she was six, standing on two ponies while they galloped round the sawdust. In October she took the ribbon at the county fair for a jump nobody else would attempt, and afterwards the vicar's wife wove a wreath for her from the bay hedge behind the caravans, tying the ends with green silk. Tilly wore it through the flooded tent, the empty Sundays and the winter we lived on tinned peaches. She never once took it off in the ring.
On the last night of the season there were three children in the front row, a dog asleep under the seats and Mr Pargeter from the bank, who had come to see if we would pay the rent. Tilly rode anyway. She rode as if the stands were full to the canvas, and when the ponies came round the final bend the wreath slid over one ear and she laughed out loud, the only sound in the whole tent that wasn't rain.
We struck the tent at dawn. I found the wreath on the rope of the empty ring, the silk untied and the leaves already curling at the edges. Tilly was loading her ponies and didn't look back, so I hung it on the gatepost where the next company would find it, and I told myself that was what it was for.
