Black and grey rose on the back of the neck
Traditional · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A large rose in bold black outline fills the back of the neck, with stippled shading on the petals and dark leaves at its base. Below, on the upper back, a partly coloured snake and wave design uses pale teal and green tones with a red eye. The rose is centred on the neck against a brick wall background.

The last bucket of roses had gone soft by eleven, and Dora Vance was still plucking bruised petals under the railway arch when a man came down the cobbles with his collar up against the drizzle. He didn't want a bunch. He wanted one bloom, the old dark kind her father used to grow in the glasshouse behind the gasworks, the ones that went black at the edges before they opened fully. She told him nobody grew them now. He said he knew, which was why he had walked the length of the wharf to ask.

Her father had grown them for a woman who never paid, Dora said, and the glass had come down in the gale the winter the river rose. She had one cutting left, rooted in a jam jar on the windowsill above the stall, and it had decided to bloom the week before. She wrapped it in a page of yesterday's shipping news and handed it over with the stem bare, because the thorns were the only part of the old trade she still trusted.
He paid in coins, then in a folded card printed with a teal wave and a green scale pattern, the kind the eel boats used to give out at the fish market. "For the snake," he said, nodding at nothing she could see. Dora turned the card over. On the back, in her father's pencil, was a list of names, women who had bought roses from him, and at the bottom a name she had not heard in years, the same as the man's.
She watched him walk back under the sodium lamps with the bloom held upright like a lit match. Then she tipped the rest of the soft roses into the gutter, pulled the shutter down, and sat on the upturned crate until the river light came grey over the wharf.
