Black and grey roses on upper arm and shoulder

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large sleeve of realistic roses with leaves wraps the upper arm and reaches onto the shoulder. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey gradients on the petals and dark, defined linework on the leaves and stems. The composition fills the frame with two main blooms, one near the shoulder and one lower on the arm, with a third rose partly visible between them.

Every morning before the cockerels, Hannah Pell lit the bakehouse oven at Fenlow, and every morning the flour bin held a scatter of rose petals that had no business being there. The last roses in the parish had gone black with frost in October. Her father said it was the old woman from the cottage at the end of the causeway, who came round the back in her patched shawl and left nothing behind but the smell of cut stems.

The old woman was called Mother Greave, and she asked for only one thing in return: a round loaf, scored in a spiral from the middle outwards, left on the step before the sun was up. Hannah thought it a poor trade for a bin of petals, but she baked it anyway. The dough rose in the tin like a fist slowly opening, and the scoring spread as the crust blistered, until the loaf looked like a bloom seen from above.

Then came the hard winter. The coal ran out in January, the river froze to the bottom of the sluice, and the bakehouse stood cold for nine days. On the ninth morning Hannah sat on the flour sacks with her hands in her lap and no fire to light. Mother Greave came in without knocking, smelling of roses in the snow, and laid a cracked copper spoon on the bench. It had been Hannah's mother's, and it had gone to the pedlar in November for coal. The old woman took the bellows from the wall and blew until the ash glowed red. Hannah baked nine loaves that week, and every one had its spiral.

On the tenth morning the thaw came, and the step held no loaf and no petal. Hannah found only the copper spoon, polished bright, lying on the sill, and beside it a single rose folded from grey paper, still faintly warm from the oven.
