A black and grey realism rose sleeve covering the shoulder, upper arm and forearm of a person wearing a dark top, with leaves filling the gaps between the blooms.

Black and grey rose sleeve

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The sleeve shows several large roses in different stages of opening, with leaves filling the spaces between them, running from the shoulder down to the forearm. The roses are built from soft shading and fine detail on the petals, with darker areas behind the blooms creating depth. The image is in black and grey, and the arm is shown three times side by side against a tiled floor and white wall.

By the time the lorries stop reversing behind the fish hall, you have sorted the last of the day's roses into three piles under the sodium lamps, and the colour has already drained out of them. Under that orange light everything turns to pewter and ash, so you work by memory and by the feel of the petals, pulling the bruised ones aside and fanning the good leaves so they lie flat for the morning buyers.

Your grandmother ran this stall before you, and she taught you to read a rose by its stage. A tight bud is a promise. A half-open bloom is a conversation. A fully spread head, its middle gone loose and deep, has already said everything it had to say and is waiting to be cut away. She liked those best, because they looked like they were thinking about something far off, and she never trusted anyone who wanted them.

At twenty to midnight a woman in a long coat comes in from the rain, shakes out her umbrella and asks for the best rose you have. You hand her the tightest bud in the bucket, the one still wrapped in its green collar, and she frowns at it. It won't open for days, she says, and she needs it for tomorrow. You tell her that's exactly why she should take it. Anything that opens too early has nowhere left to go. She pays in coins, tucks the bud into the crook of her arm like a folded letter, and walks off towards the river while the city's lights blur in the wet.
