Realistic red roses on an upper arm sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large sleeve of realistic roses wraps the upper arm and shoulder, with several full blooms in red and pink tones and small droplets of water on the petals. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients, and the dark grey and black background adds depth and contrast around the flowers. A gold chain and dark clothing appear at the top edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had been in the glasshouse since four, when the boiler clanked on and the panes were still black with night. The misters had left their fine haze on the benches, and every bloom in the forced row had collected beads of water along its outer petals, so the whole bed seemed to be sweating in the grey light. She moved down the aisle with a bucket and a pair of snips, counting stems under her breath the way her father had taught her, like other people said grace.

The wedding was at noon in a hall outside Boston, and the bride had ordered two hundred stems of Vermilion Grace, the deep red ones that opened slowly and went the colour of old wine at the edges. Ruth cut them at the angle he had shown her, the cold water stinging her knuckles. Her son Danny rang from the lorry yard to ask whether the pale pink ones were coming too. They were not. She had cut those the week before for her mother's birthday, and the last of them still stood on the kitchen windowsill at home, shedding petals onto the radiator.

By the time she carried the last bucket to the van, the sun had cleared the fen and the glass was turning gold. A ring of droplets sat on the lip of the bench where the mist had settled, catching the light like loose change. She thought of the lad who used to sweep the aisles here and sing badly over the hum of the fans, and how he had stopped coming in the spring without anyone saying why.

She bent over the nearest rose and wiped one bead away with her thumb. It rolled off the petal and dropped into the soil, and where it had been the red was still perfectly clean.
