Dear Ada, the wagons came into Shrewsbury on Tuesday with the big top still wet from Ludlow, and Mr Corran has finally let me take the painted boards down to the cellar to sort. You'd laugh at the state of me, sleeves rolled, sawdust in my hair. But listen. Among the old banners is one of a wolf in a feathered headdress, the same wolf Mother's cousin Tomas used to say was the spirit of the Wild Dog Show before the fire. Mr Corran wouldn't say whose face he painted it from.

Beneath it sits the tiger board, ochre gone to grey with age, and on the lowest panel a rose the size of a dinner plate, every petal shaded so carefully you'd swear it was breathing. Someone had taken real care. I sat on an upturned crate for an hour with a lamp, just looking at how the fur went from black at the throat to smoke at the cheek.
Then I found the ledger. Forty-one names, each with a date and a town, and beside the wolf in pencil: Took the sleeve. Paid in full. Don't let them ever tell you the ring was the cruel part. I don't know what that means yet. Mr Corran says it's nonsense from a drunk man in 1931.
I'm going to ask him tonight. If he won't tell me, I'll ask the wolf.
