Black and grey roses on a shoulder and arm

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows the back and side of a person's upper arm and shoulder, with large shaded roses and a sleeve of vines and leaves continuing down the forearm. The roses use soft grey shading and detailed petal work, while the surrounding vines are drawn in fine black linework. The image is black and grey throughout, and the arm fills most of the frame against a white top and a wooden floor.

Pass that jug over, and don't mind the lizard on the rock, he has heard this one more times than the sun has risen. You want the rose woman of Kessel Flat? Then sit down where the shade is. Her name was Ida Marr, and she came out along the Tonopah road in 1931 with one suitcase and a cutting wrapped in wet newspaper.

Nobody gave her a chance. The ground out there is more salt than soil, and the wind takes the top off anything that stands up straight. But Ida planted that cutting in a biscuit tin behind the filling station, fed it water from the radiator flushes, and talked to it the way other women talk to dogs. By the second summer it was climbing the fence posts. By the third it had gone over the roof of the pump house and started down the side of the road, throwing out thorns the way a hand throws out fingers, and the vines came with it, stitching along the ditch and up the telegraph poles.

The men who drove past laughed. Then a travelling salesman's Studebaker broke down outside her gate in August, and he sat under the leaves with the shade across his shoulder for four hours waiting on a part. When he got back to Reno he could not stop talking about the roses, dark as old pennies, heavy on the stem, shaded so deep you could read the creases in the petals. Within a month half the county had come out to see them for themselves.

Ida did not live to see the cuttings sold. She is under the biggest bush now, and the road still bends round her to keep the shade. Mind the thorns on your way back to the car. They have a long memory, and so do I.
