Black and grey rose with lace underbust tattoo

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded rose sits at the centre of a black lace-like ornamental piece that spreads across the underbust and lower chest, with dangling chain-like lines below it. The rose is rendered in soft grey shading with fine black outlines, while the surrounding lace and chains are solid black linework. The image is a close, cropped view of the torso against a pale background, with a pink top knotted above the tattoo.

Hetty had the pattern card half-punched when the foreman came round with his watch open in his palm. "Lace for the Leicester buyers by Friday, Miss Amos, and not a rose in a corner of it." She kept her eyes on the card. The Jacquard needles waited in their rows, and the hum of the frames came up through the floorboards like a second heartbeat beneath the first.

Her grandmother had drafted lace by hand in a cottage off the Lace Market, pricking holes into vellum with a pin and counting them aloud under her breath. She had taught Hetty that a border was only a fence until you hung something from it. So Hetty drew the scalloped edge first, then a fall of small chains, each link a tight loop of thread that would drop like beads on a string when the bobbins ran. Above them she left a clean oval, and into the oval she punched a rose, petal by petal, the outer ones loose and the centre pulled tight as a knot.

Friday came. The buyers held the sheet to the window and turned it over, the way men do with a thing they cannot quite price. One of them tapped the rose with a gloved finger and asked what it was for. Hetty said it was for nothing, which was the truest lie she had told all year.

That night she went back to the mill alone, lit a stub of candle, and punched one more hole at the very heart of the rose. In the morning she hung a spare sheet against her kitchen window, and the lamplight poured through that small bright hole where nobody had asked for one.
