Black and grey roses across a woman's back and arms
Traditional · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind sits with her palms pressed together at her back, wearing a black top against a pale wooden floor and a plant in a light room. Large black and grey roses with shaded petals sit across her upper back, with a small butterfly near the nape of her neck and scrolled ornamental linework on the shoulder blade. Tattoos continue down both arms, with rose and figurative designs on the upper arm and forearm.

The mule would not take the bridge, so Ysolde sat on the wet stones and waited for the cloud to lift off the Gerran Pass. Below her the valley had already gone grey and silent. Above, where the scree gave way to a ledge, a garden of black roses had pushed up through cracks in the rock, petals dark as slate and shaded at the rims where the frost had bitten. Her uncle swore they had been there before the monks built the hut, before the road, before anyone thought to count them.

Nobody in the hut would cut them. The keeper, Brannoc, a man with hands like knotted rope, said a rose picked in the pass would wilt by the lower village and take your luck with it. Ysolde had laughed at that over supper. Now she watched a butterfly, pale as ash, come down the wall and settle on the stone beside her knee. It opened and closed its wings slowly, as if counting. Then it lifted and drifted up towards the thorned ledges, and where it had rested a single bud was swelling open.
She did not pick it. She stood, took the mule's halter, and found the cloud had thinned into a bright ribbon over the ridge. The bridge boards were dry now, or dry enough. The mule crossed without a word, and behind her the rose opened fully into the first light, the way a letter is unfolded by someone who already knows what it says.
