Feather tattoo on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A person in grey leggings and knee-high leg warmers crouches forward with both hands flat on a wooden floor, with the face out of frame. A black feather tattoo runs down the front of the lower leg towards the ankle, drawn with fine outlines and soft shading. The image is mostly neutral tones, with a bright window in the background and the tattoo as the main point of interest.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Aggie Pryce had kept pigeons on the allotment behind Hollin Row for thirty years, and the morning the pit hooter went silent for good she was already out in the grey light, counting the birds back into their loft. Her son Dennis came up the lane with his cap in his hands, not saying anything, and she knew from the way he walked that the men had come up early.

Nobody in the village would talk about the colliery after that. They talked about the weather instead, and about the feathers. Every spring the racing birds moulted, and the lane filled with soft grey down that caught on fence wire and bramble and the hems of coats. Aggie swept it up with a yard brush and kept the best flight feathers in a biscuit tin, sorted by length, the way her husband had sorted his tools.

In the autumn Dennis asked her for one. He wanted it for the new job in Sheffield, where nobody knew what a pit lamp smelled like. She pulled a long dark primary from the tin and wrapped it in a handkerchief, then changed her mind and pressed it into his palm. "Keep it where you can see it," she said. "Keep it out of the coal."

He went, and the loft stayed. Years later a letter came with a photograph of the feather, drawn fine and dark in ink, and a single line underneath in his careful hand: it's still flying. Aggie sat at her kitchen table a long while before she put the kettle on.
