Geometric mandala tattoo on hand and forearm

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A person's raised hand and forearm are shown in close view, with a dense geometric mandala covering the palm and back of the hand and continuing up the forearm. The linework combines fine lines, triangles and dotted shading, and the image is black and white. Other ornamental tattoos are visible on the upper arm and the person's side, and a second person's foot appears in the lower foreground against a soft, blurred background.

The chart had been wrong for eleven years, and Marit was the only one on the island who had bothered to check it against the water. Every spring tide since she was nine she had walked the north shore with her grandfather's brass dividers in her coat pocket, counting the black rocks that rose and sank like the knuckles of a sleeping hand.

On the kitchen table, under a jar of wet sand, she laid out a fresh sheet and drew the tide the way he had taught her: a circle, then a ring inside it, then another, each ring one hour of ebb. Where the lines met she set triangles pointing out to sea, the safe channels between the reefs. She filled the gaps with dots, pressing each one in with the blunt end of a pen nib, until the paper looked less like a map than a rose window laid over a pond.

Tomas came up from the harbour with his cap in his hands, as he did every Thursday for the post, and stood over the table without touching it. He traced the innermost ring with one finger, then the triangle that pointed toward the gap beside the lighthouse rocks. "The printed chart puts a sandbar there," he said. "You've drawn water."

"The printed chart was surveyed in a calm August," she said. "I wasn't."

On Friday, at the top of the tide, the ferry came round the lighthouse rocks through the channel she had drawn, its wake white and unbroken on either side. Marit watched it from the shore with the folded sheet inside her coat, the dots still faintly raised under her thumb.
