Black and grey roses and vines on a leg

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A bare leg rests on white bedding in front of a bright window, showing a tattoo of several roses with scrolling vines running down the thigh. The roses have soft grey shading and bold black outlines, while the vines are drawn with smooth, heavy black lines. The palette is only black and grey against pale skin, lit by soft natural light.

No, sit closer, the wall has ears and the roses have longer ones. I'll tell it the way my grandmother told it to me, with the gate creaking in the proper place. Mind the gravel.

Three summers after the Hallorans left Carrow Hill, the walled garden behind their house went wild. Nobody cut the briars back. The old gardener, Tobias Wren, had died in the March frost, and his widow Mab kept the key on a red string around her neck and would not let the boy near it. The boy was Piers, eleven years old, and he hated the roses most of all. They had climbed the south wall and reached the window of his mother's sickroom, and every morning he found another bloom pressed against the glass like a face wanting in.

So one night in October he took his father's shears and climbed the wall. He cut and cut until his palms bled through his gloves. By morning the vines had doubled, and every stem he had severed had sent out two new shoots that curled round his ankles as if they meant to keep him there.

He stopped cutting. He tied the longest runner to the iron hook beside the window with a strip of his father's old shirt, then sat down in the gravel to wait for the light. When the sun cleared the wall, the bud nearest his mother's glass had opened, pale as a cupped hand and edged with frost-black. Mab said afterwards that the garden had only ever wanted a window to face. Piers never cut another stem.
