Lace garter and bow tattoo on a thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo depicts a lace garter with a bow tied at the front, wrapped around the upper thigh. It uses black linework with fine hatching and dark filled areas to suggest the lace pattern and folds of the bow. The design is in black ink only and sits across the centre of the frame against soft, warm-toned lingerie and skin.

The ribbon mill on Thornbury Lane closed on a Tuesday, and by Friday I had nothing left but the bolt of black Chantilly my aunt had hidden under the stairs. You will laugh, Nell, but I have been cutting it into strips the width of a man's hand and practising knots on the kitchen table until my fingers ache. The bow is the hard part. Every loop has to hold its own shape without pulling the whole thing apart, and Mrs Gallagher says a bow that won't stand up on its own is only a sulk in ribbon.

Yesterday I tied one for the milliner's girl, Ada, who wanted something to keep her stocking up on the walk to chapel. She wore it all through the sermon and came to find me afterwards with her cheeks pink, saying the pattern had printed a little vine on the back of her leg, as if the lace had sunk into her. I told her that was the point of good lace, that it should leave something behind. She did not believe me and I was not sure I believed myself.

So I have started a new pattern in the back of my ledger, a garter whose edging is cut from a single unbroken thread, one scallop after another. I want the loops drawn tight and the hatching dense in the shadows, so that when the light comes through the window it looks like the cloth is folded over itself. Mother used to say you could tell a true maker by what she did when no one was watching. I am writing this so that I keep to it.

Come on Sunday, if the trains run. I will have the bolt unpicked by then, and I will show you how the bow sits.
