Dagger, roses and bow on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A dagger with a blue blade and a rope wrapped around it is decorated with two red roses near the hilt and a pink bow lower down. The bold black outlines and flat, solid fills are typical of traditional tattooing, with some soft shading on the petals and rope. The two-panel photo shows the tattoo on a bare thigh against white bedding, with pink patterned fabric covering the lower frame.

Dear Nell,

The wagon has finally stopped rattling, so I can write properly. Mr Vesey has taken the blue-handled dagger off the board for good and given it to the rigger, who is rewrapping its grip in new hemp because the old stuff rotted in the damp at Ledbury. He says it will hold a truer edge that way, though I think he only likes the creak of the rope when he works the spin. You would laugh at how seriously he takes it.

The roses were my idea. After the Hereford fall, when the board split and I came down with my wrist bent the wrong way, he sat up three nights with a lamp painting the hilt red so I would have something to look at besides the canvas roof. I told him a blade wants something soft beside it or it only frightens people. He said it was the most sensible thing I had ever said, then pinned a pink ribbon to the target, and we have argued ever since about whether the bow is a joke.

Last night the crowd was thin, a wet Tuesday with the rain coming sideways off the hill. Vesey threw anyway, and the dagger stuck quivering a hand's width from my ear, dead centre in the bow. Nobody clapped, so I laughed, and then he did too, and the rigger shouted that it was the best throw he had seen since Shrewsbury.

Write back soon and tell me whether the new lodgings have a window. I want to know there is a sky above you that is not canvas. Your loving sister, Hettie.
