Black and grey roses on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A sleeve-style tattoo of several roses in various stages of bloom, with shaded petals and leaves filling the forearm from wrist towards elbow. The work uses fine shading and tonal contrast to create depth, with smooth gradients across the petals and darker recesses between them. The image is black and grey, shown against blue ripped jeans and a car interior.

Nobody at Harrowgate Junction could remember when the rose seller first came, only that the 6.40 never stopped for her and yet she was always on the platform when it pulled in. She sat on the bench by the water tower with a basket of grey roses, their petals shaded like pencil smudged with a thumb, and she sold each one for the price of a question.

A porter called Tom Keld bought one on a wet Tuesday because the question she asked him was about his mother, and he had no answer ready. She told him to keep the rose in his coat until he knew. The petals were cool and dark at their folds, lighter at the edges where the lamplight caught them, and by Friday the flower had opened one more ring.

He came back every week after that, and every week the bloom was further along, the leaves climbing over his wrist as if the stem had remembered his arm. By the autumn the rose had reached his elbow. He stopped asking the woman anything. She only nodded at the petals and said that was how you knew a thing was finished.

The last train that winter carried him out of the junction with a satchel and nothing else. The bench by the water tower was empty when the porters came round, except for a single bud lying on the slats where the woman had sat. Nobody saw her go. By morning the bud had opened, and it was perfect.
