Black and grey roses on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded black and grey sleeve of roses runs up the inside of a forearm, with a butterfly near the top and small script tattooed close to the wrist. The roses have soft tonal gradients and fine detailing on the petals, and the ink is set against bare skin. The forearm is held across a lap in a car interior, with the background softly out of focus.

The roses at Carrow Hall had gone grey for three winters running, and Maud Ashdown blamed the foundry smoke drifting up from the valley. On the morning the steward came to the glasshouse with a list of sills to be repainted before the duke's visit, she was already on her knees by the north wall, mixing soot and gall into a shade she had promised herself she would never use again.

Her apprentice, a boy called Tobin who could not yet tell a bloom from a bud, held the lamp while she worked. "Shadow goes underneath, always," she told him, "and the light has to come from somewhere it can't be seen." She had learned that from her mother, who had painted the same roses on the chapel ceiling and never once signed her name to them. Beside the lamp a single butterfly, pale as dust, had come in through the broken pane and settled on the wet edge of the petal she was building.

Maud meant to brush it away. Instead she sat back on her heels and let it stay, watching its wings open and close while the ink dried around the faint print of its body. When the steward returned at dusk he found the sill finished, every rose shaded to a silver so fine it looked like breath on glass, and a butterfly in the corner that nobody had painted.

"The duke will ask who did this," he said. Maud handed him the brush. "Tell him the garden did it," she said, "and that the garden wants its wages."
