Black and grey peony and rose thigh tattoo

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey tattoo of peonies and roses with leaves covers the outer thigh of a person with bare legs, seated on a car seat in white sneakers. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded with soft grey gradients to give depth and volume. The image has a warm, slightly grainy tone, and the tattoo is the clear focal point against the dark seat and blurred red background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The peony roots had been in the cold store since Christmas, wrapped in damp sacking like contraband, and Mrs Oakley wanted them in the ground by Friday or she would take her custom to the garden centre on the bypass. I told her peonies sulk when you move them, that they can sit for three years refusing to open out of pure spite. She said her mother had planted the same white ones in 1961 and they had never sulked once. I didn't argue. Nobody argues with a woman who has brought a drawing.

The drawing was pencil on the back of a seed invoice: one fat peony and two roses tumbling over each other, leaves like torn paper. Someone had shaded the petals with a thumb, so the grey pooled deepest where the flowers folded inward. Her husband had done it, she said, the winter before he went into the hospice in Maidstone. He had wanted it put on something that would outlive the paper. Not ink on skin, she said quickly, as if I had suggested it. Something growing.

I set the roots in a row along the south wall, eyes facing up, a hand's depth down in clay that smelled of rain. Then I dug rose cuttings from the bed by the gate and tied them to a cane with twine the colour of weak tea. It took the whole afternoon. She stood with her arms folded and watched me work, and when the last cane was staked she asked if I could make the roses lean the way the drawing leaned.

In May the white peonies opened all at once, the way they do after a long grudge. Mrs Oakley came back with the invoice folded in her coat pocket, its grey rubbed soft from handling, and asked me to plant the roses in a shape that would show from the road.
