Black and grey roses, rosary and cross on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black and grey tattoo wrapping around the forearm. Two shaded roses sit at the centre, with a rosebud and leaves above and a looping rosary chain of beads linking the motifs. A cross with detailed metalwork shading sits at the lower left edge of the design.

The van's heater ticks as you drive the ring road at four in the morning, the back loaded with buckets of black-edged roses for Monday's weddings. Your mother's rosary hangs from the mirror, and every bend swings the beads against the glass like someone counting under their breath. You have stopped pretending the sound doesn't keep you company.

At the loading bay Ruth from the next stall is already unpacking, sleeves pushed up, a cigarette parked behind one ear. She nods at the wilting bunches you were meant to sort and says the cold store smells of wet cardboard tonight. Inside, under the buzzing strip lights, you find a single rosebud still wrapped in brown paper, dropped behind a crate, its petals tight as a fist. Nobody on the rota admits to ordering it.
You pocket it rather than bin it. All morning, while the shutters rattle up one by one along the market and the sky goes from ink to pewter, you keep your hand in your coat, feeling the stem bend against your palm. By the time the last bus pulls away you have decided where it goes: a jam jar on the windowsill above the sink, beside the rosary you never quite learned to say.
Ruth sees it there on the Thursday and says nothing, which you take as a kind of blessing. The bud opens slowly, one petal at a time, the way the city does after a long night, grudging at first and then all at once.
