Black and grey roses on shoulder and upper arm
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large roses, one near the shoulder top and one lower on the upper arm, with curling swirls and small leaves between them. The roses are shaded in smooth greys with soft highlights and dark, defined petal edges. The photo is cropped at the chin and shows a white top with the word LOVE printed in black on the chest.

Dear Ada,

The frost took the cold frames again last night, so I spent the early hours at Mr Pell's bench with a lamp and a pot of cuttings I was told not to touch. You will laugh, but the one he calls the Ashgrove is the grey one, the bloom that goes silver-white at the edges and darker toward the heart, like pewter left out in the rain. He says it was bred from a rose that came over in a sea chest in 1861 and nobody has seen its colour since. I believe him more than I should.
He sent me down to the lower beds to cut bramble off the old wall, because the Ashgrove will not climb unless its tendrils are coaxed around something. I tied them with green thread, tight enough to hold and loose enough to let the sap run. Mr Pell watched my hands and said that a thing that wants to climb will always find a way up, and I thought of you then, sat on the step with your shoes off, swearing you would never leave Hollins Row.
The last bloom opened at four, just as the sky over the glasshouse went the colour of dishwater. Its petals were furled so tightly at the outer edge that they looked drawn in charcoal, each one shaded a little darker than the last. I wanted to pick it for you. Mr Pell shook his head. Leave it on the stem, he said, it has to be seen in the light it was made for. So I am sending you this letter instead, and a pressed leaf that I will not promise survives the post.
