Black and grey roses on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph from behind of a woman's shoulder and upper back, with a cluster of large roses, a smaller rose bud and several leaves tattooed across the shoulder blade and upper arm. The linework is fine and precise, with soft stippled shading in the petals and leaves. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey against pale skin, and the blurred studio background sits behind the subject.

Mari had the flower stall under the railway arches off Digbeth by half past three, before the vans from the Dutch auction came in with their cold breath. She was my cousin's girl, nineteen and impatient, and she wanted to learn to draw. I told her you learn roses by counting the petals that don't show, and by paying attention to the dark inside a bloom, where the light gives up.

For a month she sat on an upturned crate with a propelling pencil and a sketchbook, stippling dots the way I'd shown her, one tiny mark at a time, until the shadow in a petal had weight. Her first rose looked like a cabbage. Her fourth looked like something you'd want to put your face into. I kept the bad ones in a biscuit tin under the till, and she pretended not to care when I counted them.
On the night of the first frost, a man came down the arches asking for three white roses for a woman who had left him. He offered double. Mari looked at his soaked coat, then at me, then she took the receipt from his hand and drew the roses on the back of it, small and exact, each petal folding over the next. She told him they would not wilt. He laughed, paid the full price and walked off holding the paper flat against his chest like a ticket.
I found the sketchbook the next morning with a page torn out and the tin lid open. Inside were one cabbage rose and a closed bud, both initialled in the corner. I never asked where the receipt went. Some nights, locking up under the sodium lights, I think about that man reading a flower he could not hold.
