Blue floral medallion on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A circular medallion of flowers and leaves, with large blossoms at the centre and smaller sprays and scrolling foliage around the edge. The design is shaded in several tones of blue on pale skin, with dark linework defining the petals and leaves. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a plain background, with a denim sleeve at the top left.

"Mind the cobalt, Jansje, it is not flour." Master Brandt said it every morning for eleven years, and every morning I thought he meant the blue powder itself, which came up the canal in sealed casks and cost more than my father's boat. He did not. He meant that a brush loaded too full would pool, and a pool would dry into a bruise on the glaze.

The commission that spring was a charger for a captain's wife in Hoorn, who wanted her dead mother's pattern copied exactly. The original had broken on a stair, so we had only the shards to go by. I worked the scrolls at the rim while Brandt took the great blossoms at the centre himself, lifting his wrist in those short, certain strokes that made the petals look wet. My own leaves came out thin and nervous. I kept picturing the captain's wife turning the plate over to read the mark on its base.
Then I overloaded one scroll and the blue spread into a smudge the size of a fingernail, right beside a peony. I wanted to scrape it and start again, but Brandt only wiped his hands on his apron and said the kiln would have its say.
When the plate came out of the firing, the smudge had softened into a shadow under the petal, the way light sits under a real flower on a grey afternoon. Brandt turned it in the window for a long while without speaking. Then he sent it off to Hoorn with my name on the invoice, and told me the mistake was mine to keep.
