The apothecary's widow in Ludlow Gap kept her bundles on a nail above the back door, and everyone in the valley knew which ones were hers because she tied them with a loop rather than a knot. Parsley for the butcher's wife, who had a temper and needed something green to chew after the Sunday roast. Lavender for the schoolmaster, who could not sleep unless the room smelled like a church that had been swept. Sage was for funerals, and nobody ever asked for it twice.

In the hard winter of fifty-three, a boy called Tobias Renn came to the door with a shilling in his fist and no sprig to show for it. His mother had sent him. The baby upstairs at the farm had a fever that the doctor from Clun could not name, and the doctor had gone home. The widow looked at the shilling for a long moment, then at the boy's boots, which were wet through, and she took down the bundle she had been saving for herself.

She did not tell him what the herbs were for. She only said that the ribbon had to stay tied while the water boiled, and that if he untied it before the kettle sang, the whole thing would be for nothing. He ran the whole mile home with the bundle held against his chest like a cat, and he did not once look down at the loop.

The baby lived. The widow never said she had done anything, and the farm never sent a shilling again, but every spring after, a fresh bundle appeared on the doorstep wrapped in brown paper, with the ribbon tied in a loop.
