Rose and rosary on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey tattoo of a rose in full bloom sits on the upper arm, with shaded leaves around it and a rosary of beads hanging down towards the elbow, ending in a cross. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth gradients on the petals and strong highlights on the beads and cross. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a white vest and a grey floor.

Nobody on the Tucson road ever saw Ruben Salas hand over the rosary, but everybody at the Dos Palmas cantina knew it had been his mother's. She kept it wound around the gearstick of a flatbed Ford for thirty years, and when her hands went stiff she gave the beads to her son with instructions and no sentiment. Drive the road at dusk, she said, and you will find what you are looking for, or it will find you.

He drove it at dusk. The sand came across the tarmac in long pale tongues, and the saguaros stood along the verge like men who had lost an argument with the sun. Somewhere past the third cattle grid a woman in a cream dress stood at the shoulder with a rose the colour of ash in her hand. She did not wave. She only held the flower out, and the cross at the end of the beads swung slow in the heat.

He pulled over. She was gone before the engine stopped ticking, but the rose lay on the passenger seat, its petals grey in the dashboard light, and the beads had been wound neatly around its stem.

Old Esteban at the cantina says the rose still sits in the glovebox of that Ford. Nobody has ever opened it to check, and that is the way Ruben likes it.
