Black and grey traditional flash sheet
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of nine separate tattoo designs drawn in bold black linework with hatched and stippled shading on a white background. The subjects include two male character heads labelled with names, a rose wrapped in a banner, a skull with crossed shovels, a framed portrait, a candle, a hand holding a rose, and a boombox. Colour is absent, and the designs are arranged in a loose grid with even spacing between them.

You learn the harbour at Scarrow Bay by its noises before its shape. The winch at the fish market whines at five, the gulls start arguing over the bins at six, and by seven the chapel bell has given up on the tide. Your uncle Eli hands you the gloves that smell of diesel and says the rose on the stone wall outside the Ferry Office was planted by a man who drowned looking for it. Nobody believes him. Nobody ever believes Eli.

The rose is not a rose. It is a hand, pale and open, pushing up through a bloom of iron-coloured petals that the council keeps painting over. Every October someone scrubs it back, and every spring it returns with the first hard frost, as if the harbour wants it there. You take the job of repainting it because the council pays cash, and because you are seventeen and Mrs Hollis from the Ferry Office stops to watch you work with her arms folded like a judge.
On the third morning the hand has a ring on one finger that was not there the night before. Brass, fat, stamped with a small anchor worn almost flat. You know that anchor. It belonged to the Tern, a crabber that went out on a Tuesday and came back without its skipper. Eli goes quiet when you show him. He tells you to put the ring back exactly where it sat, then go home and stay there.
You don't. You sit on the wall at dusk with the brush across your knees and wait for the tide to turn, and the hand, very slowly, closes.
