Hush, the lot of you, the lamp is low and I am older than the pumps, said Old Brannoc, tapping his pipe against the rim of the canteen table. You want the tale of the white helmets. Pour me the brown stuff first, and mind the dice, they're still warm from Wenna's hand.

Back when the salt company ran Cinder Bend, they sent up a squad of white helmets with blank visors and rifles longer than a man's arm. They marched in step through the shanties and took what they pleased, and nobody asked whose orders were folded in their pockets. One evening they came into the dice house on Shaft Row with their stakes stacked high, and Wenna Tolly, who kept the felt with her crooked grin, let them lose their coppers one roll at a time.

Near midnight the last of them, a tall lad with a dent in his helmet, slid his rifle across the table and said, One roll, for everything. Wenna shook the bone dice in her palm and they clattered out double sixes. He laughed, pulled off the helmet, and pushed it toward the shaft girl who had been watching from the stairs. Some came, some gave all, he said, and then he walked out into the dust, the stripe on his shoulder bright under the moon.

Brannoc's pipe had gone out. And the helmet? someone asked. He shrugged. Still hanging over the girl's bed, I'm told. She never once lost a roll.
