The lamp at Scarrow Head had been dark for nine nights when the boat came in without a light, and Orla Quill went down to the slip with a lantern because her father could no longer manage the wet steps. The boat was low in the water and rocking, though the sea was flat. Someone in the stern was singing very quietly, the same three lines over and over, and when Orla held the lantern up she saw a black mark painted on the bow, six rounded arms meeting at a single point, the mark her grandmother had scratched on the tally board to show where the Gannet Rocks lay under the tide.

The man at the tiller said he had come from the far side of the Sound, where the light had gone out two winters back, and that he had been steering by the mark on his own boat for so long he had forgotten it was only paint. Orla took his rope and tied it fast to the ring. She told him the mark was older than the paint, that it had been cut into the iron frame of the lamp room door before her grandmother was born, and that anyone who needed the rocks shown to them only had to look for six arms and count the gaps between.
He climbed the seventy-one steps behind her with his hand on the rail, stopping at each landing to press his thumb to the iron where the mark was cut. At the top Orla took down the oil can that was meant for the spring and filled the reservoir with her father's hands guiding hers. The beam swung out across the water, and the boat below went quiet and steady.
In the morning the bow was clean, though the paint had been scrubbed off, and on the slip there was only a wet black mark on the stone where the tiller had rested all night.
