Paw print and script letter on an ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo sits on the outer ankle of a bare foot, showing a stylised script letter beside a solid paw print. The lettering has a flowing hand-drawn quality, while the paw pad and toes are filled in with dense black ink. The skin is in sharp focus against a busy leopard print carpet, with the toes visible at the right edge.

Mrs Tully had counted the prints every morning since the first frost, and every morning there were four more than the day before, pressed into the white crust along the seawall from the boathouse to the chapel steps. Her grandson Owen said it was a fox. Mr Pryce at the shop said it was a seal's idea of a joke. Mrs Tully said nothing, because she had seen the thing herself on Tuesday, a grey shape no bigger than a loaf working the drift behind the net shed, and it had looked up at her with a face like a wet thumb and gone back to digging.

On Friday she laid a saucer of herring scraps on the step and sat on an upturned creel with her knitting. The shape came at the hour the tide turned, paused at the edge of the lamplight, and sniffed the air the way a clerk sniffs a dubious cheque. Then it stepped forward, and she saw the mark it left behind: a neat black pad, and beside it, scratched into the frost with a hooked claw, a looping letter G.

Her husband had been called Gideon. He went out in the March gale of 1971 and the boat came back without him, and the pup he had bought for the crossing never once set foot on the mainland again. She laid down her needles. Well, she said to the creature, which was already eating, you have taken your time.
