Three stars on the top of a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot raised slightly off a pale wooden floor, with a white wall behind. Three small solid black stars sit in a loose diagonal cluster on the top of the foot, one slightly larger than the others. The toenails are painted bright pink, and the lighting is even with soft shadows.

Mrs Tully had kept the Gull's Rest for thirty-one winters, and in all that time she had never let a guest leave without a full tin of biscuits and the story of the three lamps. Nobody asked for it. It came out with the tea, while she wiped the sugar bowl with the corner of her apron.

Her grandmother had told it to her in the back kitchen, with the coal range ticking. Three sailors off the Carrick rocks once took the lamp from the church spire to light their way home through a fog. The lamp was too hot to hold, so they set it on the water, and it sank in three pieces. Each piece rose again as a star that never quite kept step with the others, so that anyone who looked up on a clear night would see them wandering apart and know to come home.
The lodger that spring was a surveyor called Pell, who measured the cliff path for the council and wrote in a notebook with the cap of his pen between his teeth. He laughed at the story. Then one evening he came down to the kitchen with his boots in his hand and asked whether the largest of the three was the one that had carried the flame.
"It's the one that never went out," Mrs Tully said, and she went back to the sugar bowl.
The next morning Pell left early, his bill settled and a tin of biscuits on the table. She found his notebook open on the sill at a page of small sketches: three stars, one bigger than the rest, tilted toward the window where the harbour light would catch them.
