Four-leaf clover of hearts on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A four-leaf clover made of four outlined heart shapes sits on the side of an ankle, with the petals meeting at a small central knot. The linework is dark grey with soft shading inside the petals, giving them some depth. The tattoo is centred in the frame against bare skin, with denim at the top edge and dark fabric beneath.

The clock over Platform Nine had stuck at ten to four again, so Dilys Trant ran the lost property hatch by the glow of her desk lamp and the last grumbles of the Leeds line. At half past eleven a man in a wet wax jacket slid a tin across the counter. Inside, on a bed of tissue gone the colour of weak tea, lay four pressed leaves cut into hearts, their stalks knotted together in the middle with green thread.

'Found them on the bench by the ticket barrier,' he said. 'Nobody's claimed them in three days.' Dilys turned the tin in her hands. She knew that knot. Her mother had tied one just like it on the ribbon of every birthday parcel, and swore a clover made of hearts would bring back whatever you'd misplaced. Dilys had never believed her, which was why she had spent eleven years on nights in a place where everything was lost and almost nothing was found.
She logged the tin under miscellaneous and did not put it on the shelf. When the man had gone and the platform lay empty under the green signal lamps, she walked it out past the barrier and set it back on the bench, lid open, where anyone sitting down would see it first.
At six the first milk train rattled in. A girl in a borrowed raincoat came down the steps, looked along the benches, and stopped dead when she saw the tin. She picked it up carefully, as if it might still be warm, and pressed the lid shut with her thumb. Dilys watched from the window and, for once, didn't reach for the ledger.
