Black banded linework on forearm and upper arm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man with a lean, muscular torso shows a tattoo made of solid black bands and thin parallel lines wrapping the forearm and up onto the upper arm. The linework is crisp and graphic, with a mix of solid black stripes and fine grey-black lines that follow the curve of the arm. The ink is black and grey on a dark, plain background, with the subject's face cropped out of frame.

Dear Walter,

The relief man finally came up from Carlisle on Tuesday, so I have had two nights of proper sleep and a whole afternoon with nothing to do but watch the platform. Mr Pryce has had the gangers laying new sleepers on the down line, and every morning I count them from the signal box window, one dark bar after another, until the rails run out past the water tower like the stripes on Father's old blazer.
Something odd happened on Thursday. The 6.10 stopped short of the platform with its brakes singing, and a porter I had never seen before climbed down with a roll of drawings under his arm. He asked which way the rails had buckled in the frost. I told him the truth, that nobody bends anything in this county without Mr Pryce hearing about it. He laughed and spread the drawings over my tea tray. They were bands of black ink, fine lines ruled close together and curling round the paper like a sleeve. He said they were for a man in Leeds who wanted the lines of the track carried on his own arm, so he would always know which way was home.
I thought of you then, out on the Midland with your lamp and your sums. Come home at Christmas and I will show you the drawing. I have kept the tea tray for you.
