Black brush enso circle

Black and grey · Flash

A single open circle drawn in black ink with a dry brush, thick at the left and thinning at the top right where the stroke ends. A small pointed shape near the top right suggests a head, and the stroke tapers into fine dry-brush edges. The plain white background and solid black ink make the design stand alone with no colour or shading.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink has gone thick in the stone well since dawn, and Master Hoshin has told you twice already that the grinding is not the lesson. You kneel at the low table with the rice paper pinned flat and the brush heavy in your fist. You are to draw one circle in a single breath. Not a perfect one, he says. A true one.

You have failed for nine mornings. Each circle closes too early, or wobbles, or your wrist hesitates and the line goes grey. Beyond the temple wall the river is loud with snowmelt, and somewhere a bell has stopped mid-note. This time you do not think about the wall, or the paper, or the old man breathing beside you. You only let the brush move, low and heavy on the left where the ink pools, then lighter as the stroke comes round, until the tip drags dry across the fibres and the edges fray like frost on a windowpane.

Near the top right the line curls back on itself, and something happens that you did not plan. The brush lifts a fraction early, and a small wedge of ink sits where the stroke should have ended, shaped like a head turned to look at its own tail. Master Hoshin leans in, very close, and says nothing for so long that you begin to apologise. He raises one hand. Leave it, he says. The circle was never going to finish itself.

He carries the sheet to the window and holds it against the pale light. The gap at the top stays open, a thin dark breath. He sets it to dry on the mat with the others, and the one with the little serpent head is the only one he does not sign.
