The ring was the last thing the Fenwick Brothers' Travelling Show had left that still turned true, and Old Mab the bull had walked its circle every evening for eleven winters. Her horns had been filed to blunt knobs by then, but her eyes were clear, and she knew the sawdust by its smell better than any man in the company.

When the money ran out in the wet autumn of that year, the brothers sold the wagons one by one: the calliope, the striped tent, the painted lion. Only the bull was left, because nobody in the county would buy a bull trained to kneel for a child's coin. So they kept her in a field behind the chapel in the market town, and a ploughman's boy came every morning with a bucket and a worried face.

The story the boy's grandmother told, years later, was that the bull stood at the gate each night facing south, the way she had always faced the ring, waiting for music that did not come. On the last night of the old year she walked the fence line three times, round and round, and pressed her great head to the gate until the latch gave. Nobody saw her go.

In the morning the field held only a ring of trodden grass, as round as a compass drawn in ink, and the road south was wet with her prints, one after another, all the way to the sea.
