Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a single black line drawing of a stylised bird, with arching wing lines curving above and a long tail of thin strokes trailing below. The linework is thin and tapered, with some strokes thicker than others to suggest movement. It is drawn in black ink on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Her name was Ilse Varro, a shepherd's girl from Caddon Hollow, and her brother Tam went over the snow in the wrong month to fetch the herd home before the storm. The storm came early. Ilse stood at the cairn each dusk and sang the call the sheep knew, and every evening a grey bird rose from the rocks below and turned its wings against the cloud, banking so close she could hear the quills creak.

On the ninth night the bird did not turn. It let its long tail drop over the edge of the rock, the way a rope is lowered into a well, and Tam, half frozen, climbed it hand over hand. Ilse always said the feathers were warm as bread and that she never once saw the bird's eye. The sheep came down by morning, and Tam came down with frost in his beard and a single feather caught in the buttonhole of his coat.

So when you cross here, leave a pebble on the cairn, and if the wind lifts your hat, let it go. That is the bird asking for its rope back. Now, who wants the part about the wolves?
