Black cat with suitcase on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black cat stands upright on its hind legs, holding a yellow suitcase decorated with a blue and orange flower in a diamond-shaped panel, with a yellow umbrella hooked over its shoulder. Smaller flowers and a windmill sit around it on the forearm. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills in black, grey, yellow, orange, pink and blue give it a classic traditional look.

The cat is already on the towpath when you come up from the galley with the kettle, its suitcase set square at its feet as if it has booked the 7.12 bus. The yellow umbrella hangs over one shoulder, furled, though the sky above the lock is the flat, unbothered blue of a bank holiday. You say its name. It does not turn round.

The Mabel Rose has been your home for eleven years and the cat's for seven months. It came aboard in March, wet and furious from the rain, and claimed the bow locker as its own. It ate sardines off the chopping board and slept on the good cushions and never once looked grateful, which you took as a kind of manners. Last week it started watching the windmill on the far bank, the one with the cracked green sails that turns only when the wind comes from the west, and you pretended not to notice the way it sat with its tail wrapped round its feet.
The lock keeper says the mill is empty now, the miller's family gone to Leicester years back, but he also says the sails were turning yesterday for the first time since the spring. You don't argue. You pour the tea into two chipped mugs, then one, then put the second back on its hook. The suitcase's little tiled flower catches the sun as the cat lifts it with both paws.
You follow as far as the bridge. The umbrella opens over its head, a small yellow dome moving along the hedgerow toward the green sails, and you stand there holding the cold kettle until the sails start to turn.
