Colour tattoo of an anchor wrapped in rope and pink roses with green leaves, on the outer lower leg, in a traditional style.

Anchor and roses on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A grey-shaded anchor with a coiled rope runs down the leg, with clusters of pink roses, small blossoms and green leaves across its upper shaft and fluke. The anchor uses bold black outlines and hatched shading, while the flowers are filled with pink and yellow highlights. The skin is shown against a tiled floor and a brown mat, with frayed denim visible at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You find the anchor where your uncle left it, under a tarpaulin in the boathouse at Staithes, its flukes furred with a year of salt. Nobody asked you to carry it up the hill. The florist has already done the arch in pink, cabbage roses cut from Mrs Ruddock's garden at dawn, and the bride wants something from the sea to stand beside the cake. So you wrestle it onto the handcart, rope still wound around the shank, and pull it along the harbour wall while the tide goes out beneath you.

Halfway up the cobbles the rope snags on a bolt and a loop slips free. Your cousin Tom would have sworn at that. Instead you kneel on the wet stones and work the knot loose with your fingers, because it is the only thing your uncle ever taught you properly. Tucked under the coils is a scrap of card in his square capitals: FOR WHOEVER MARRIES THE GIRL WITH THE ROSES. You read it twice, the gulls going on above you. Then you fold it into your breast pocket, stand up, and push on.

In the marquee the bride is laughing at something the vicar has said. You set the anchor down among the petals and she turns, sees the rope, and her face goes still the way faces do when a story walks into the right room. You hand her the card. She reads it, looks at the groom, then at you, and says, 'Did he know it would be me?' And you tell her the truth, which is that he never once said he did.
