The tide had taken the lower courtyard of Carrick Keep by the time I climbed the broken stair with a lantern, and the wind kept trying to put the flame out. Somewhere under the gatehouse a cat was yowling the way cats do when they have been left on purpose. Old Mrs Tregenza at the harbour swore the creature had belonged to the last lord's wife, and that it had not once come down from the walls in two hundred years.

I found her on the parapet, tail curled into a question mark, watching the moon. It hung thin and low over the water, a paring of silver with a bite gone from one side, and the sea was lifting itself towards it in long, reaching curls. The cat turned her head. One eye caught my lantern and burned back amber, the only colour on the whole cold cliff.

I had brought a saucer of milk because my grandmother always said you should never climb a ruin without one. She leapt down to it, lapped once, then went straight to the arch where the spray was thrown highest and sat on its edge like a rider on a horse. Where her weight came down, the water stilled. The waves drew back from the walls a foot, then another, and the moon slid along the sky until it rested on her shoulders like a bridle.

When I went back at dawn, the courtyard was dry to the cobbles and the saucer was licked clean. A single wet paw print ran up the keep steps and stopped at the door. Mrs Tregenza says I should have left more milk. I say the sea has behaved ever since, and I have stopped asking the cat why.
