Feather dissolving into birds on shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large feather runs down the upper arm and shoulder, shaded in soft greys with fine barbs along its edge. A flock of small black birds rises from the feather's top and continues across the shoulder and upper chest, with the tattoo's linework and shading clean and even. The image is black and grey throughout, with a plain background and a necklace visible at the neck.

Nell found the feather in the pocket of her grandfather's wax coat on the third morning of frost, folded small between a bent nail and a stub of baler twine. It was as long as her forearm and the grey of wet slate, and when she held it up to the kitchen window the light caught the barbs in a fine dark fringe.

She had meant to take the coat to the church jumble and leave the rest for the auctioneer from Hexham. Instead she sat on the back step with her tea going cold and watched the top field, where a hundred starlings had come down onto the stubble to pick at what the combine had missed. From the step the field looked like a page someone had shaken out.
When the dog barked they lifted all at once, and the sound of their wings was like a sheet being snapped over a line. Nell stood with the feather still in her hand. The flock swung west over the hedge, thinned, and split into threads that kept climbing until she could no longer tell which dark mark was bird and which was only sky. She had always believed her grandfather kept the feather because it was handsome. Now she wondered whether he had been waiting for a morning cold enough to let something go.
She set it on the step beside the mug, weighted with a stone, and went in for her boots. When she came back out the wind had lifted it off the concrete and it was tumbling across the yard, shedding a little more of itself with every turn, until she could no longer follow it past the gate.
