Black flame tattoo on back being laser treated
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a solid black, angular flame or abstract tribal-style emblem tattooed on the back. The design is bold, with heavy outlines and little shading, and the ink is dark grey-black against the skin. A laser handpiece with a yellow warning label is pressed near the tattoo, and a white bra strap is visible across the lower frame.

Four in the morning and the bakery smells of wet flour and the first of the coal. I have the big oven open already, the one Mr Halloran swore would outlive the lot of us, and I stand in front of its mouth the way he taught me, one hand flat on the iron, counting to ten before I trust the heat.

The stamp is on the bench where he left it, a squat brass thing with a black flame cut into its face, all jagged points and hard edges. He pressed it into the crust of every tin loaf so the shop girls could tell his bread from the supermarket rubbish. Nobody on Ferry Lane can remember what it was meant to be. He called it the hearth. I called it the spiky one until I was twenty.
This morning the man from the council came with a clipboard and a lecture about fire regulations. The oven has to go by spring, he said, unless we swap it for something with a dial and a plug. I told him to come back at five and watch the first batch come out. He didn't say no, which I am choosing to count as a yes.
Before the light came up I took the stamp out to the back step and rubbed it with a rag and a little oil until the old soot lifted off the grooves. Then I pressed it into the dough one last time. The loaf came out with its flame still sharp against the crust, and by six the whole street smelled of bread.
