Solid black lotus on upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large solid black lotus flower fills the centre of the upper back, with pointed petals fanning out to both sides and a layered bloom at the centre. The ink is fully saturated with no shading or grey, giving the design a bold, graphic silhouette. The photograph is taken from behind and above, with a pink wall and framed artwork visible in the background.

The moat of Carrow Keep had been dry since the lord's grandfather died, except in one corner where an old drain ran under the broken gatehouse and kept a black pool that no heron would stand in. The village of Hollin did not draw from it. Ada Pell went there anyway, because her mother was dying and the apothecary said only the flower of the drowned moat would ease her. A crusader's wife had planted it there long ago, he said, a strange foreign bloom that had never once been seen by daylight.

She found it at dusk, one bloom open on the still water, its petals layered like roof slates and dark as wet coal. She knelt on the cold stone, and the water did not wet her knees. A voice came up from the gatehouse arch, thin as a reed. It said she might take one petal if she left something of equal weight in its place. Ada thought of her father's spade, her brother's name, her own good shoes. In the end she gave the thing she had brought without meaning to, the song her mother used to hum over the bread.
She walked home with a petal folded in her apron. When she reached the cottage, her mother was sitting up and asking for bread, and the room smelled of rain. Ada laid the petal on the table. By the time she looked at it again it had gone to ash, grey and light as dust. Her mother hummed the old tune under her breath, though she could not remember why. Nobody in Hollin drew water from the moat after that, and nobody in Hollin ever again heard that song.
