Tribal shape on upper back

Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bold, abstract tribal-style design in solid dark ink sits across the upper back near the shoulder blade, with sharp angular points and a tapering tail. A small asterisk sits above it, and a line of small text reading "I was 17 at the time." runs along the lower right. The ink appears blue-grey and the image is a close, evenly lit photograph of the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every autumn the herring boats came in heavy and quiet, and Mrs Doyle at the galley hatch on Scarrow Quay counted the lamps before she counted the men. Seven lamps, seven men. The eighth boat, the Mary Gannet, had gone out beyond the Stacks the week the wind turned, and her lamp had not come back.

Her son Tobias ran the stove for the crew that year, and he swore he had seen a bird over the water that was no gull. Its wings were cut sharp as slate, he said, and its tail dragged a line of fire down through the cloud. Mrs Doyle told him to get on with the potatoes.

On the ninth night the storm came over the headland with a noise like cutlery falling down a stair. Tobias stood at the hatch with a ladle in his hand and watched the sky split in a jagged white seam, and then he saw the bird again, folded into the light. It did not fall. It hooked its angular wings and dropped a single lamp onto the slipway, burning steady in the rain.

The Mary Gannet came in on the tide with her crew asleep in the hold. Mrs Doyle lit her stove from that lamp and never said where it had come from. Tobias kept the ladle, and every autumn after that he hung a lamp at the end of the quay for a bird nobody else would admit to seeing.
