Finger tattoos and mandala forearm
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest on a pale surface, with black glitter nails and several silver rings with opal and moonstone settings. Black ink finger tattoos include an eye, a crescent moon and small chevron marks, with a dotted detail on one finger. A larger mandala-style design with dotwork shading covers the forearm at the lower left, and a small fine linework mark sits on the wrist at the lower right.

The Halloran Brothers' Travelling Wonder had shrunk to three wagons, a fire-eater who had given up fire, and a fortune-teller called Nell Sorrow who wore a brass eye on a chain round her neck. When the rains came the wagons stuck fast in the mud outside Thornwick, and the manager, a man named Pim Dulley, said they would sell the lot by Michaelmas.

Nell did not argue. She climbed the caravan steps at dusk, took out a tin of moonstone and opal rings she had bought from every pawnshop in the county, and laid them on the table in the shape of a moon's horn. She told the children that the moon was owed a debt. Every crescent that rose over a dying show, she said, was a moon looking for a lamp to light its road.
On the third night a stranger came up the lane, a thin boy with ink on his fingers, who said he could draw the moon onto a person so it would never set. Nell asked what it would cost. He said only one day's work for each ring. She held out her hand. He drew an eye on her first finger, a crescent on the next, and small chevrons like tent poles down the rest, and every morning after that the fair found a new ring waiting on the gatepost.
Pim sold nothing by Michaelmas. The wagons rolled out under a lit moon with Nell at the reins and the brass eye swinging on its chain. Folk say you can still see the marks on the hands of anyone who travels with her, and that the moon always finds the road.
