Black lace band tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two photographs show the same forearm from different angles, with a black lace-style band tattoo wrapping around it. The band has scalloped arches, petal-like motifs, small dotted details and short dangling drops along the lower edge. The linework is fine and the ink is solid black, with no colour or shading, and the bare skin around it is in clear focus.

The fiddler at the Long Barn would not tune a string until the lace was finished, so Maud Harrow sat on the cold step with her needle and a spool of black thread, working by the light that spilled from the door. Men outside stamped their boots and blew on their hands. Inside, the floor was already chalked for the harvest reel, and her sister Ettie kept walking to the window to see how far the stitching had got.

There was no pattern. Maud's mother had worn a cuff of her own making, scalloped at the edge like the lip of a church window, and it had gone into the river with her the winter before. So Maud made it from memory. She drew each arch with the point of the needle, pricked a petal into the centre of every one, and knotted a single dot where the thread turned back on itself. Along the lower edge she hung small drops, each stitched loose so it would shiver when the wrist moved.
When Ettie stepped onto the boards, the drops began to swing, and the fiddler, who had seen a hundred cuffs, lifted his bow and forgot to lower it. The reel went on without a tune for a count of eight. Afterwards the old women said it was the lace that had held everyone still, though Maud knew it was only the thread, pulled taut, doing what she had asked of it.
Ettie wore the band until the black thread greyed at the edges. Maud had left one drop unhooked on purpose, so the band never quite closed, and whoever wore it could still feel the reel going on round the arm.
