Paisley and floral design across a upper back

Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large ornamental tattoo of paisley swirls, leaves and stylised flowers spreads across the upper back, with a sweeping stem running down towards the lower left. Bold black outlines define the motifs, while fine stippled dotwork fills the centre and adds soft tonal shading. The image is in black and white, and the design fills most of the frame against smooth skin.

The pattern cards came up from the drying room every Friday, stiff as hymnals and smelling of linseed, and Nell Gourlay was the only one at the Thistle Street mill who could make the dots sit right. Her father had taught her with a needle and a sheet of pricked card, showing her how the teardrop the Kashmir weavers had carried into every corner of the world was really just a seed that had decided to turn over and look at the sky.

The shawl ordered by the Ardmore family had gone wrong in the spring. The dye had bled into the stippled centre, and the foreman wanted it binned. Nell sat under the gas lamp after the second shift, a loupe at her eye, tracing the swirls with a pencil and counting the dots in fives so her hands would stop shaking.

By four in the morning she had found the fault: one punch in the stem had been struck twice, so the whole bloom leaned a hair to the left. She did not fix it. She cut a fresh card, pricked the stem one hole to the right, and let the flower lean where it wanted.

When the ledger came back, the buyer had written nothing about the error. He had only sent a second order, asking for the same flower, with the stem running down and out of the frame, as if it had somewhere else to be.
