Rose vine running down the back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A back-view photograph of a tattoo made up of several shaded red roses with green leaves, joined by a long black swirling vine that follows the spine from the shoulders to the lower back. The roses are rendered with realistic shading and small highlighted dots, while the vine and leaves use bold black linework. The subject's head is cropped out of the frame, and the plain skin tone and dark background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The vine had been growing up the garden wall of the Hartley house for thirty years, and nobody in Wrenmoor had ever been allowed to cut it. Maud Pellow knew this as well as she knew the church bell's crack. So when the new lodger, a silent watchmaker's widow named Ines Calloway, asked her to help strip the wall for re-plastering, Maud took the job on the condition that the roses stayed.

They worked through a damp October. Ines had a way of stopping mid-stroke to look at the blooms, as if counting them. Each rose had a dark red heart and a ring of paler petals that curled outward like the edges of old letters. Maud pointed out the thorns, the green that bruised black, the places where a sparrow had nested in the cross-bar of the trellis. Ines listened and said nothing, then asked whether the vine had ever been trained along a spine of wire or had simply found its own way up.

On the last afternoon, Ines climbed the ladder with a pair of snips in her hand and cut one stem clean, low, where it met the mortar. She held it out. Maud took it without thinking, and a single drop of red welled on her thumb where a thorn had caught her. Ines smiled and said the vine would root wherever it touched soil, so the wall would always have roses somewhere, even when it was bare. Maud pressed the stem into the wet earth by the gate, and by spring a green shoot had come up through the gravel.
